When you said,
you love me like a checklist
did you mean,
like a to-do list?
The recipe didn’t taste as good
the second time
though we did everything the same.
Neither were the leaves
as yellow the second year,
but dammit if the trunk didn’t
feel more delicious to wrap our arms around.
When you said,
you’ve got better shit to do,
did you mean
better shit you’ve already done?
There is only so much time to sleep
if we stay up all night arguing.
There is only so much stuff to do
if we spend the whole day sleeping.
